Immigration and Policing
Amada Armenta's forthcoming book, Protect, Serve, and Deport: The Rise of Policing as Immigration Enforcement, considers how local police are pivotal actors in the immigration enforcement system--even though they technically don’t enforce immigration laws. Armenta, an assistant professor of sociology, calls this “the ‘crimmigration system’ because it’s a blurring of the line between law enforcement and immigration enforcement. This research is part of her broader research interest in how government bureaucracies respond to the presence of Latino immigrants, and conversely, how Latino immigrants adapt to life in the U.S.
